EduSport

We also have long-standing school holiday programs offering half-day activities for kids who would otherwise have to sit at home unsupervised while their parents are at work. The holiday programs incorporate sports clinics aimed at raising the skills level of students and participating educators.

A highlight of the EduSport program is our involvement in the sports leagues which features 11 schools competing across a number of district codes.

PS4L also has a number of innovative projects in progress and in the pipeline to further enhance the reach of the EduSport Program among young girls and women to redress the imbalance of females in sport. Chief among these is our investment in resources and time in The Magic Ladies Football Program. The program’s objective is to have more girls play football at a younger age, to keep more women in the game longer, and to promote empowerment of women in football. Opportunities will be sought for program participants to pursue their football dreams. It will include scholarships at local and overseas tertiary institutions. The program will also explore playing opportunities with local professional teams and exposure to the top international teams in Europe through our global football network. The Magic Ladies Program has also acquired the Milano Ladies Sasol League franchise to use as a platform to develop ladies in football.

After Schools Leagues

The After Schools Leagues has proved an extremely popular activity that PS4L has been involved with. The project sees different sport leagues organized among schools (intra-school) in the community, allowing participation in a friendly and non-threatening way. Providing learners with the opportunity to play sport after school promotes a more balanced education that addresses body, mind, and spirit. Allowing the youth to gain an appreciation of sport at school is essential in advocating for a healthier lifestyle. It is important to promote and encourage sports participation. It helps fight the high rate of obesity that is on the rise among young South African students. The ongoing challenge is to maximize the positive impact, by also helping improve the skill level of educators, and highlighting physical education as a separate imperative (separate from Life Orientation).

School Holidays and Tournaments

One of the mainstays of PS4L activities in the 10 years of our existence has been the sports tournaments held throughout the year. They have provided opportunities for participants to showcase their athletic skills and abilities to not only their friends, their family, and public, but also a valuable chance to be noticed by talent scouts. They were exposed to coaching and refereeing activities and were rewarded with a range of prizes. After each tournament, PS4L put on a closing ceremony that included motivational keynote speeches from prominent community members and it is rounded off with musical performances from some of our best entertainers.

Each holiday program highlights a particular life skills component that is run as part of PS4L’s Start Smart Campaign.
